History of Newfound Gap

The Newfound Gap area was first used by Native Americans, who left behind artifacts such as arrowheads and pottery shards. The gap was named by English settlers who arrived in the area in the late 1700s. The gap was so named because it was the “newfound” route over the mountains, as opposed to the older, more treacherous route over Clingmans Dome.

The first road through the gap was built in the early 1800s. The road was improved in the 1920s, when the Appalachian Trail was created. The first visitor center in the area was built in the 1950s. The Newfound Gap area was designated as a national park in 1934.

Some people refer to this area incorrectly as Newfoundland Gap.

What is Newfound Gap?

Newfound Gap is a mountain pass in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that lies on the border between Tennessee and North Carolina. The gap was first discovered by European settlers in the late 18th century and was later used as a trail by settlers moving westward.

In the early 20th century, the gap was considered as a potential location for a roadway through the Great Smoky Mountains which is now Newfound Gap Road. In the 1920s and 1930s, the federal government and the states of Tennessee and North Carolina worked together to construct a roadway through the gap, which was completed in 1932.

The roadway, now known as Newfound Gap Road, runs from Gatlinburg, Tennessee, to Cherokee, North Carolina, and is a popular tourist destination within the park.
