Kuwohi, formerly named Clingman’s Dome, is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, as well as the highest point in Tennessee at 6,643 feet in elevation. It is located on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina and is reached by a steep, half-mile hike from a parking lot on Clingmans Dome Road. The summit of the mountain is an observation tower that offers 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. On a clear day, visitors can see up to 100 miles away. The tower is open year-round, weather permitting.
Kuwohi is the Cherokee name for the mountain and translates to “mulberry place.” In Cherokee syllabary, the name is ᎫᏬᎯ. Kuwohi is a sacred place for the Cherokee people and is the highest point within the traditional Cherokee homeland. Kuwohi is visible from the Qualla Boundary, the home of the EBCI. Efforts are already underway to update signage, website and other materials with the Kuwohi name.
Kuwohi, was formerly Clingman’s Dome was named after Thomas Clingman, a 19th-century politician and geologist who surveyed the area.
The mountain is home to a variety of plant and animal life, including spruce-fir forests, wildflowers, and the endangered Southern Appalachian spruce-fir moss spider.
Kuwohi (Clingman’s Dome) is one of the most popular destinations in the park, and it is especially crowded during the peak leaf-watching season in the fall. During this time, the park service provides a shuttle service from the parking lot to the trailhead to reduce congestion.
